In foreshadowing of the book of Exodus, Abram experiences his great fall. Because of famine, he leaves Canaan and goes down to Egypt, abandoning the promises of God. To protect himself, he gives Sarai away to Pharaoh. God, through Pharaoh, rebukes Abram, gives him back his wife, and sends him away. Abram returns to Canaan, where he builds an altar and repents openly. When he and Lot dispute about land, he shows faith by allowing Lot to pick his land first, but Lot foolishly settles near Sodom, leaving Canaan to Abram.
