In a startling act of faithlessness, Sarai conspires to conceive a child through having Abram sleep with her maidservant Hagar. When Hagar gives birth to Ishmael, Sarai becomes jealous and abusive towards her. Hagar flees to the desert and Jesus meets her at a well and tells her to go back and promises to bless her son Ishmael (whose name means “God hears”), who became the father of the Arab nations.
