This week we see how God remains faithful even when we are not as he re-commissions Jonah after fleeing from the presence of God, a near ship wreck, a 3 day trip in the belly of the fish and a "vomitous" return to the beach where he started. God’s love for a city full of sinners and the power of his word to change their hearts is evident.

So far, in the first three chapters, Jonah looks bad. He receives clear instruction from God to go to Nineveh, but runs. God tries to get his attention with a storm, but he sleeps. God sends a non-Christian captain to convict him, but he doesn’t listen. God uses a pagan dice game to call him out, so he asks to get thrown overboard. Jonah nearly drowns, but God graciously rescues him. Finally, after getting spit up on the beach, covered in fish puke, Jonah gets the idea that there’s no avoiding God so he goes to Nineveh, preaches an unspectacular five word sermon, the entire city falls on its face before God, repents of their sin and God relents from the promised disaster.

But, instead of getting better, it gets worse for Jonah in chapter four. Here we learn of Jonah’s initial motivation for running from God. Jonah knew that God is a “gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster” (4:2, cf. Ex 34:6-7), and he couldn’t stand the thought of Nineveh being forgiven its sins and accepted by God. Therefore, after leading one of the greatest revivals of in history, Jonah becomes angry with God for offering grace and mercy to these wicked, violent unbelievers, even after his great declaration, “Salvation belongs to the Lord!” (2:9). God then patiently and graciously uses a series of questions and an object lesson to point out Jonah’s great self-centeredness and self-righteousness, being more concerned for a mere plant, and his own comfort, than the souls of an entire city (not to mention the cows!).

Jonah’s heart is revealed. Jonah likes God’s blessings when they’re in his favor, he prefers personal comfort over others coming into relationship with Jesus Christ, and he forgets that he is no different than the Ninevites. Jonah elevates the blessings that God has given him to enjoy (i.e. salvation, shady plant, etc ), above God, and then advises God on how best to distribute such blessings to others. We do the same thing, acting just as self-centered and self-righteous. This chapter challenges us to assess our lives in Seattle and ask whether we’re more concerned for our personal well being than the spiritual well being of this great city.

Questions for application:
· What are the “shady plants” in your life?
· Are you more concerned with them than with getting to know and love Jesus?
· What are you willing to give up for the sake of others knowing Jesus?
· Do you know and feel that you are no different than anyone else in this city?
· Who are 3-5 people in your life that God wants you to love on, pray for, and point to Jesus?

We see the Jonah’s heart full of nationalism, racism most of all religious self righteousness. In contrast, we see God’s heart full of compassion, grace and love towards the great city of Nineveh. In His mercy and patience God crushes Jonah’s idolatrous religion.

An amazing miracle has happened as an entire NATION of people drops to its knees in unified repentance to the one true God. It’s every pastor’s BEST dream, but the prophet Jonah... sits. And whines. Seems a bit anti-climactic for the end of the book, like a overly-hip indie film. What we see is that even a guy God employs to bring a nation to its knees can do everything the Lord asks and still not get it.

Jonah is upset that God is not how he wanted or imagined Him to be. God is sovereign and God is free, and Jonah – as we do – needs to define God by who he reveals himself to be. We are called to put our trust in an untamed and mysterious Creator, not our creature comforts or the things we THINK we have figured out. Jonah is humbled in the final chapter, reminding us of our constant need for growth in Christ as we tackle the incredible mission He has for us in the city He has c alled us to.

Despite his great knowledge of God’s character, Jonah’s wicked heart is revealed when he doesn’t get his way.
In this sermon Pastor Jamie shares with us the incredible story of God’s mercy on the wicked city of Nineveh through one man’s eight word sermon. Through scripture and his own personal experiences of God’s continual pursuit and grace, He calls us to be salt & light to the cities in which we live with Nineveh-like expectation for revival through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

As our 4-week series on Jonah continues, a fish pukes… and the prophet rebukes. If a piece of walking, talking vomit stumbled into town and said you’ve only got forty days before God cuts you down, what would you do? Laugh? Get on your knees? I’d listen to the vomit if I were you.

Jonah strolls into town like a bleach-skinned zombie and mumbles a few words, and somehow an entire nation of over 120,000 people – men and women, kings and peasants, drops to their knees. We have seen God’s power over the air, the sea, animals, his prophet’s life, and finally the impact He can have over an entire city if it pleases Him. Jonah was not a powerful speaker, but the Word of God cuts through people’s hearts like a knife and causes repentance.

Do we believe Seattle today could be changed like Ninevah, or is our faith and trust in God weaker and more impotent than Jonah’s? Every day God does not bring vengeance upon a si nful city is another day we live commissioned to walk humbly and show mercy, instruments of God’s compassion testifying to salvation possible through our Lord Jesus Christ. If we don’t believe God can change the hearts of everyone in Seattle, our view of God is too small and we should begin to pray to the God of Jonah who is truly sovereign over both our habitat and our hearts.
