<invite-email-template>On January 11th Mars Hill Church began a new 7 seven month series titled "Trial: 8 Witnesses from 1&2 Peter".

Peter is arguably the easiest person to identify with in the Bible. No one in all Scripture is as volatile and impulsive as Peter. On his worst days, he bossed Jesus around and denied even knowing him.

Trial: 8 Witnesses from 1&2 Peter is a theme taken directly from the two books. Peter uses the theme to teach that a trial is an opportunity God uses in our life to help us become Christians, or grow in maturity as Christians. Therefore, a trial is an opportunity for us to learn about Jesus and grow to be more like him. The trials that will be covered from 1&2 Peter fit within the eight categories of temptation, submission, marriage, suffering, humility, faith, doctrine, and perseverance.

We are all worshipers we either worship God and enjoy him, or we worship the things he's created—this is idolatry. Most people don't realize that they worship things like cars, clothes, kids, sports, hobbies, and houses—but they do. They make sacrifices for them and find their identity in them. This sermon helps remind us all that besides Jesus, everything else is kindling.

Perseverance is finishing well and making the last day the most important day. If you love Jesus, read the Bible, and try and live a life that is obedient to Scripture out of love for Jesus, Peter tells us scoffers will come. Ultimately Christianity is this: Jesus lived, Jesus died, Jesus rose, Jesus is coming again. Everything Christians believe hinges on facts while the fear of hell does not compel Christians to persevere as much as the hope of God’s Kingdom. We look forward to going home, seeing Jesus.

Humility is central to the life of an obedient Christian. God came to earth as Jesus—in a humble state—showing grace and patience with his people. The Bible calls Christians similarly to imitate their Lord, and shed their pride.

*TEXT:* 1 Peter 5:5 - 14
*PREACHER:* Pastor Mark Driscoll
*DATE:* May 10, 2009
h3. Introduction
The letter of 1 Peter culminates with the theme of humility. Earlier in the book, Peter described Christians as ""elect exiles":http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=1+Peter+1%3A1" of God's kingdom. As we journey toward our King and his kingdom, we identify ourselves as belonging to God by striving to live by the humble standards set by Christ rather than the standards of pride set by the world.
As John Calvin said, "If you ask me concerning the precepts of the Christian religion, first, second, and third, and always I would answer, 'Humility.'"
True humility is...
1) The fear of the Lord (Prov. 1:7; 3:34).
2) Christlike. Following in the ethic of Jesus based on the grace he provides.
3) Accepting your place (Rom. 12:3).
h3. Humble Christians Respect their Elders ("1 Peter 5:5":http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=1+Peter+5%3A5)
Elders (pastors) are qualified and appointed male leaders within the church.
Humble Christians should heed the elders' counsel.
In case of disagreement, one should respectfully follow the "chain of command" approach.
h3. Questions to Develop Humility
Are you teachable?
How do you respond to correction and rebuke?
Do you repent quickly and thoroughly?
How considerate are you of others?
Do you give and receive service well?
Are you constantly aware of God's grace?
Do you disagree agreeably?
How much do you need attention and affirmation?
h3. Humble Christians Make Good Leaders ("1 Peter 5:6":http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=1+Peter+5%3A6)
Good leaders serve out of love, not selfish ambition.
Aspiring leaders mustn't think of themselves as more highly than they ought.
Young (spiritually), aspiring leaders often let zeal get ahead of maturity.
It is important to humbly distinguish between God's calling and God's timing.
h3. Humble Christians Understand their Life ("1 Peter 5:7 - 11":http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=1+Peter+5%3A7%9611&src=esv.org)
*Internally - * Humbly acknowledging God's ultimate sovereignty takes away anxiety.
*Externally - * Those who are humble acknowledge their need for God's help to recognize and resist Satan's temptations.
*Eternally - * God eventually restores and exalts humble Christians with him for eternity, making the suffering of this life seem relatively short.
h3. Humble Christians Bless their Church ("1 Peter 5:12 - 14":http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=1+Peter+5%3A12%9614)
The church needs humble servants like Silvanus and Mark.
Humility fosters a joy, a sweetness, and a kindness among a people; the humble make great friends, spouses, parents, and leaders.
The one thing that can destroy Mars Hill Church is pride.
Pursue and develop humility by the grace of God.
